Housing is a concern that affects living conditions for populations in every county of the Northeast Florida Region. Affordable housing, as defined by the Florida Affordable Housing Study Commission Final Report, is “housing that costs no more than 30 to 35 percent of a householder’s income.” When housing costs exceed this level, our residents may experience difficulty in building wealth and achieving the quality of life we aspire to for all residents.
The Council reviews Comprehensive Plans and significant developments related to their impact on affordable housing in the Region. An Affordable Housing Committee is has created an Affordable Housing Needs Plan.
The Council is also involved in meeting this need through its administration of the SHIP (State Housing Initiatives Partnership) Program which assists the very low, low, and moderate income households. The Council operates as the planner for the SHIP program in Putnam County. If you are interested in participating in the program, contact St. Johns Housing Partnership at (386) 530-9042.
