The Northeast Florida Regional Council (NEFRC) recently completed a Shrimping Industry Market Study, funded through a Community Planning & Technical Assistance Grant from Florida Commerce. Focused on the coastal counties of Nassau, Duval, St. Johns, and Flagler, the study explored ways to support small shrimping businesses, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen the regional food economy.
Seven regional meetings were hosted, engaging shrimpers, community members, and industry experts to ensure the recommendations reflected real-world needs. Final suggestions include forming a regional cooperative, building a stronger shrimping brand, and expanding partnerships with workforce programs and public agencies.
NEFRC will now begin working with community partners to turn these ideas into action and secure resources for future projects supporting this historic industry's longevity.
